Interesting commentary, though I think the questions by some of your readers raise some interesting points of debate that I do not see you address. It is a constant source of bemusement that Christians use passages from the bible to justify and support their position, but any inconsistencies or challenges to those same passages are put down with the convenient preposition of "faith." When biblical references are inconsistant with ones own morality or understanding, how then can any other part be defended as devine revelation. The old testament in particular shows us a "God" who is contemptuous of its own creation. An omnipitent being who knows the past present and future, indeed created us with the knowledge that we would never be able to live up to the demands it places on us would under any other condition be reviled for its condemnation of actions, we and our children are in turn are judged for. Deut. 23:2
No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of his descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation. This is the same God who demands we worship him. Who would even give their respect to a judge who ordered a raped woman to marry, honour and obey a man who raped her? (Deut 22:28)... To those who say Jesus came to give us a new code to live by ... I could go on.. but as a discussion point lets look at (Matthew 5:17-18) Jesus comanded that we live by the old testament Laws.
Finaly lets rap this comment up with Mathew 15:1 (4) whoever curses his mother or father shall be stoned to death.. lets remember this is the same Mother or Father that by their actions have condemed said son/daughter and their children (unto the 10th generation!)

I agree that we are the thief on the cross but you didn't come close to explaining the story the bible demonstrates. We are all sinners, but the two questions that most have is 1. Did the thief ask for forgiveness and did Jesus forgive him of his sin without confession (there is no demostration of this) 2. Was he forgiven without being baptisted?
I believe you did a great done of revealing how man still relates to the theif on the cross but you did not address if the thief came into salvation. And even if you attempted to answer question number one, I'm not sure if you could explain your answer using biblical references. It would be more or less of your opinion than absolute truth regarding the what happend between Christ and the Thief.
But God bless you for your efforts. I believe we are better off by saying we don't understand some of the stories in the bible. I believe most of the scriptures can not be explained regardless of the individuals views or considering themselves to be a theologian.

Michelle - I just happened to find this site today and I see the message you left is dated Dec 5, 2010. I wish I had read this sooner because after all my years of living and reading religious books I can assure you the if you truly believe in Christ you will be saved - no matter what you have done. God Bless you and I hope you have found Peace in the Lord. A friend who cares.

I am a pastor studying for my Easter sermon. This commentary really ministered to me, and I am going to share some points made here. YES, we are that thief. Guilty of death, but Jesus made it possible for us to be with Him in paradise!

Thanks!!

Dont say those things about yourself, you may feel that way but God doesnt, you are the most precious thing in his life and he went all the way to the cross to find you and give you life. It will be hard but claim the promise phillipians 4:13, you can do all thing through Christ who strengthens you =) believe him and you will be saved. Take care and God bless

I really needed to read this tonight. I am the thief on the cross and I know it. I will be judged by man and I only hope and pray that the judge will have mercy on me. I haven't done anything violent to anyone but I did steal something and I have no excuse. I am really pathetic and I know it. I am ashamed and humilated and I am scared of what may happen but I know that God is with me through it all.

i don't know who is reading this is anyone but if you could please say a prayer for me PLEASE.

Thank you and God Bless you!
